Awesome Article about Interviewing from Monster

Hi All!  This is a really good article about interviewing.  It is short and sweet and worth the read:

Job Interview Myths

You should definitely check it out.  The best part is how it describes that you shouldn't assume that an interviewer is prepared for the interview.  This is something that is really important to remember throughout the entire interviewing process.  When people are in a job search it totally consumes them and often times they assume that making the hire is equally as important to the company as it is to the candidate.

The reality is that companies still have to run their business while trying to navigate hiring someone and no matter how important making a hire is they have more pressing needs.  Remember this as you go through the process.  If a company doesn't call you back immediately it doesn't necessarily mean that they aren't interested.  They just might have other things going on.  The same thing goes when you are in the interview.  Don't be insulted that the interviewer hasn't taken the time to read your resume soup to nuts.  It is not meant as a slight.  Your resume is meant for one purpose and one purpose only - to get the interview.  From there it is up to you to nail the interview.

Thank You Notes – Mail vs. Email

Often times I remind people to send a thank you note after an interview and I’m met with some shock.  “Really? – use the mail?”  That’s right!  That thing that brings you bills, magazines and ungodly amounts of advertisements can also be used for personal correspondence….

Many people I talk to assume that this is an either or type of thing.  Either you shoot off a quick thank you email that shows up immediately or you do the more formal, antiquated thing. Honestly, I think that the only way to be truly safe is to do both.  The reasons are as follows:

  1. In our lazy world email thank yous are expected.  Failure to do so will make you look out of touch or uninterested.
  2. Sending an email has significant value – you can create a dialogue
  3. Sending something in the mail will set you apart from the pack.  I estimate that 25% of people actually go to this trouble

So…  What should be in your email and note?  Here are the basics:

Thank You Note

Your thank you note should be short and sweet.  Go and buy a professional looking, generic and blank card at Target or Wal-Mart (Make sure that it isn’t for Weddings or Babys).  With a nice ball point pin and in your best penmanship write a simple message.  Something like:

Dear Mr. Ferguson,

Thanks for the wonderful meeting on Tuesday.  It was a pleasure to meet you and learn more about your company.  I look forward to hearing from you soon!

Sincerely,

Scott Thompson

A couple of things not to do.  Don’t add a gift card or anything else in the envelope.  That’s tacky.  Also for the ladies out there – refrain from spraying perfume on the envelope.  This seems outdated but I’ve seen these things happen.

Finally, I’ve found that it is pretty easy to prepare this the night before.  Write out the envelope and put a stamp on it.  Send it out immediately after the interview.

Thank You Email

I’ve found that employers expect a thank you email as they have given up on most of us having Emily Post-like manners.  You should treat your thank you email similarly to the thank you note in that it should be short and sweet.  However, because of the flexibility of the medium you can add a little bit more.  I suggest that you add two things.

First, after thanking them for the opportunity to meet specifically mention something in the interview that you found to help your case.  Also mention that you have a formal thank you in the mail.  Say something like:

Dear Mr. Ferguson,

Thanks for the wonderful meeting on Tuesday.  I just mailed you a note thanking you for your time but wanted to immediately thank you as well.  It was a pleasure to meet you and learn more about your company.  I was excited to hear about your firm’s focus on puppetry as I interned at Sesame Street and am a huge fan of Jim Henson.

From there the next step is to write some form of question.  The reason I suggest adding a question is because email gives you the unique ability to continue the interview after the fact.  You can create a dialogue.  Because of this you need to add a question that is both open ended and insightful.  Be careful here as it also needs to be easy to answer.  A bad question would be about the benefits – the only response you can give is “thanks!”  Instead shoot for something like this:

“After our meeting I was thinking about your puppet design philosophy.  Do you encourage puppeteers  to create their own characters?”

So there you go – that’s my spiel about thank you’s.  One last bonus tip to go with this.  Don’t become an email stalker.  Just because you now have an email address doesn’t mean you should use it.  If you thank you is not responded to you should read into it as it means one of two things.  Either they aren’t interested or they don’t like to have additional conversations with candidates outside of the interview setting.

If you have any additional questions or comments please feel free to email me at sthompson@insurance-csg.com.

Have a great week!!!!

5 Dumbest Things You Can Say in an Interview Part II

Welcome back!  This week I've been discussing some of the stupid things people say in interviews and how it can hurt them.  To recap the first three were:

  1. Being Negative
  2. Saying that you aren’t really looking
  3. Making Arrogant Statements

You can read the entire first part here:

Moving on to #4 on our list…

4.  Bringing Up Controversial or Inappropriate Topics

First let me say that I think that it is terrific that you are a liberal/conservative Jewish/Christian/Muslim transsexual.  That said this is your business and not your interviewers.  It is incredibly arrogant and ignorant to assume that any and all people that you meet hold the exact same values as you.  When interviewing it is really important to steer clear of controversial or deeply personal subjects.  If you offend the interviewer then you will not get the job.  Period.  End of story.  Some of the subjects you want to avoid are:
  • Politics
  • Religion
  • Sex
  • Race
I’m going to go a little deeper here on this one and speak specifically to insurance.  For some reason it has become fashionable to speak poorly about the President of the United States.  Often times I hear people say some pretty negative stuff about him in response to healthcare reform.  I’m not sure why people think that this is OK – but it isn’t.  I’m personally not a fan of healthcare reform – I have my reasons.  However, just because there are people on TV lobbing hate filled grenades at each other (I’m talking to both sides of the aisle here) doesn’t mean it is appropriate in an interview.  Be professional, polite and avoid these subjects.

Your other option is to share your worldview as much as you can and wait for that other liberal/conservative Jewish/Christian/Muslim transsexual with your exact same values to be hiring effectively cutting out 90% of the other jobs out there.

5.   Asking about Non-Job Related Things

So you are interviewing for this great job.  The interview is going great.  You are a perfect fit, the culture is great, it’s close to your home, you like your potential new boss.  As they begin to wrap up the interview you are asked if you have any questions.  What do you do?  Unfortunately, many people fail in this area miserably and start asking questions that have very little to do with the actual job.  They start asking about the salary, benefits, vacation… even the parking situation.  This is really dumb for two reasons and I’ll tell you why.

First of all it looks tacky and makes it appear that you are more concerned about these “little things” rather than the job.  We live in a culture that is incredibly weird and unfortunately companies and candidates are bound by different rules.  It is completely OK for a company to ask your salary expectations.  It is not OK for you to ask the same of the company.  It is hypocritical but it is the way of the world.  Additionally, we have some crazy ideals that people cling to.  One of them is that you should take a job for the “right” reasons.  I’m here to tell you that compensation and benefits are a right reason.  However, it isn’t’ seen this way by most employers so beware.

The second reason is more philosophical.  When you are in an interview you have a finite amount of time to make a lasting impact and to sell yourself.  Wasting this time to get transactional information is just plain stupid.  If you have questions about stuff like this you can always follow up with an email. Instead you should come up with a great, insightful question about the company that shows you did your research and that you are thinking about this job.  If  you can’t do that then at least ask the interviewer why they like working for the company.  People feel good when they talk about themselves and it will help them think of you more favorably.

That’s all I have for today.  Happy Interviewing.  As always feel free to email me with any questions, concerns or suggestions at sthompson@insurance-csg.com.
