The Commercial Lines Director role will start up a property and casualty division from the ground floor for a retail agency in Austin. The firm is well capitalized with a current portfolio that includes traditional insurance revenue and diversified, non-insurance business holdings. Commercial insurance will be the main focus of the agency’s growth strategy moving forward, so its incumbent upon the person in the leadership role to develop and execute the successful launch of the practice. Over time as the commercial division grows your role could be more heavily slanted towards management, but in the first few years of development the revenue needed to create the practice will come through your ability to sell.
Commercial Lines Director, Managing Producer Responsibilities:
- Sales: Conceptualize a middle market property and casualty practice, develop a strategic business development plan and work with internal resources as well as compete in the open market to bring new clients on board. Use the agency’s ties in other states, Austin business clout and shared resources to generate a pipeline of commercial clients. You will be responsible for helping define what “middle market” means to the portfolio both in terms of account size and industry specialties.
- Service: The agency’s personal lines division will have some established Best Practices and workflows that can translate to the commercial division however it will be important that you establish your own protocol for onboarding, policy administration and renewal management. Introduce the necessary technology resources and training structure for the service team.
- Marketing: Strengthen relationships the agency has begun building with key commercial insurance company partners but also seek out those new contracts necessary for you to write the type of business you see as most profitable and viable in the company’s target markets. Also establish roles for producers and support staff on who handles new business marketing, renewals and over time as the division grows you’ll decide if a centralized placement department is needed.
- Operations: Participate in infrastructure decisions related to department structure, size and resources. Work with executive leaders to forecast budgets, manage P&L and project revenue goals. Help identify M&A opportunities that bring revenue to the agency in addition to your own sales.
Commercial Lines Director, Managing Producer Requirements:
- Bachelor’s degree with at least 7-10 years of career experience within the property and casualty insurance industry. This work must be primarily focused on the retail agency/brokerage side in sales and marketing where you have demostrated success developing new business, being the lead client advisor and also working closely with markets to maintain a high level of retention.
- A true property and casualty technician. You’ll be the subject matter expert on middle market business with an ability to blend the agency’s current portfolio options with where you see the greatest opportunity with traditional commercial industries. The decision on the book of business makeup will be based on your sales abilities and knowledge of the local market.
- Strategic and business savvy with an entrepreneurial mindset. Familiar with the Texas insurance market and would see this as a terrific opportunity to chart your own course as if you’re running your own agency without the headaches of creating funding, infrastructure, branding or without a much larger business portfolio to support you.
- State insurance license.
